Tyler Greengard was born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 2005, after having their house severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina, his family was forced to relocate and eventually settled in Birmingham, Alabama. There, Greengard began studying flute at age eleven, and tenor saxophone at age fourteen. After entering Hoover High School, he discovered an interest in jazz. He then became a member of the Hoover High School First Edition Jazz Band, in which he performed at the 2014 JEN Conference and the 2016 Swing Central Jazz Competition. During this time, Greengard’s professional career was launched as he performed with many Birmingham-based bands as well as his own. In 2015 and 2016 he was accepted into the Jazz at Lincoln Center Summer Jazz Academy, where he had the privilege of studying under Wynton Marsalis, Ted Nash, Vincent Gardner, and other world class faculty.

Following high school, Greengard attended William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. There, he studied under Bill Charlap, Vincent Herring, Harold Mabern, Rich Perry, Aaron Goldberg, Jeremy Pelt, Geoffrey Keezer, Aaron Diehl, and many more. During his junior year, he recorded his first record: “Trio,” which was later released in December 2019. The William Paterson University Department of Music and Honors College awarded him the "Outstanding Musician Award" in his senior year. In May 2020, Tyler Greengard graduated from William Paterson University summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies & Performance.
